Snapchat continues to grow with an improved Android app and interest in its Spotlight feature. During the first quarter of 2021, the app added 15 million new users, bringing the app’s average daily user base to 280 million, as the company reported in its first quarter 2021 results.

Notably, Snapchat had more Android users than iOS for the first time this quarter. The company did not provide an exact breakdown by platform, but CEO Evan Spiegel called it a “milestone” for Snap, which has committed significant resources to improving its once-glitchy Android app.

Spotlight, the app’s TikTok-like feature that pays users for popular clips, also continues to be a bright spot for the company. The feature is now available in 12 countries and 125 million monthly users in March. Spiegel said the platform’s applications increased 40 percent between January and March (in February, he reported that Spotlight receives an average of 175,000 applications per day).

Snapchat also reported significant revenue growth, reaching $ 770 million for the quarter, up 66 percent from last year.

Spiegel said the company is capitalizing on reopening efforts, which has resulted in more engagement and more conversations between large groups of friends. “As the situation in the United States began to open up at the end of February, we saw tipping points in key behaviors such as posting stories and engaging with Snap Map,” Spiegel said. “More recently, we saw an increase in new friends and bi-directional communication on Snapchat at the end of March as people began to communicate in wider groups.”
