Microsoft buys Clipchamp - to improve video editing on Windows

In July, Clipchamp, founded in Australia in 2013, reported about 17 million registered users from more than 390 thousand companies; its partners include Deloitte, Google and Dell.

Now Microsoft is about to add Clipchamp to Microsoft 365 plans and probably even to Windows itself.

“As a web application that harnesses the full power of your PC, Clipchamp is ideal for extending the cloud-based work tools in Microsoft 365 for individuals, families, schools and businesses.”

Chris Pratley,

Vice President, Corporate Communications, Microsoft Office Media Group

Pratley also mentions that “it’s great for Microsoft Windows.” That is, in the future, Microsoft may integrate Clipchamp into Windows as well. Clipchamp is now available on Windows as a standalone Microsoft Store app, but the OS’s current video editing tools aren’t impressive to say the least. The situation could improve with the launch of Windows 11 and potential Clipchamp integration in the future.

Just before the Clipchamp purchase announcement, Windows CEO Panos Panay teased a new photo app for Windows 11 with more advanced photo and video editing tools.

The current standard photo app in Windows 10 can edit video, but it offers a primitive set of tools and doesn’t even come close to the editing capabilities available in Clipchamp.

Clipchamp combines a combination of templates and a library of filters, transitions, standard media files and styles to create videos with multitrack audio support and easy editing. The Clipchamp acquisition appears to be part of Microsoft’s new strategy of focusing on creativity and consumer-focused apps.

Recently Microsoft has hired a former top manager of Uber as Head of Consumer Applications. A few months earlier, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that “the next 10 years will be devoted to both creativity and consumption and the community around it.”
