Rumours about a new version of the Apple TV set-top box have been circulating for quite some time. In the tvOS 14.5 beta code, references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz” were found – apparently, the company is testing this model for a future device.

The increased frame rate will provide users with smoother content playback and make the gaming experience more enjoyable. The current generation of Apple TV supports 4K resolution at 60 fps – the maximum HDMI 2.0 allows. If the new model is capable of 4K output at 120fps, it will be equipped with HDMI 2.1, which has higher bandwidth. This, in turn, will require a compatible TV.

In terms of other specs, the new Apple TV is reported to be equipped with the A14X chipset, increasing its performance. By the way, the other day, we said that Apple had expanded the library of Arcade games. So, apparently, the main emphasis in the console will be on the gaming component. The release of the device should take place this year.
