Microsoft is finally getting ready to update the icons, which have remained largely unchanged since Windows 95. Gradual work in this direction has been going on for some time, and as part of the upcoming Windows 10 update, scheduled for the end of this year, users will expect a “radical visual rejuvenation”. Among other things, Microsoft plans to update the Windows 95-era icons that are still occasionally found in Windows 10.

In the preview version of Windows 10, we were able to find new versions of icons for hibernation, network, memory, disk drive, etc., which are part of the shell32.dll file. This DLL is a key part of the Windows Shell that displays icons in various dialog boxes of the operating system. And this file is also the main reason why Windows icons have been so inconsistent over the years. Microsoft frequently upgraded other parts of the OS, but did not change these icons, which sometimes appeared in dialog boxes and applications.

This work to improve the visual consistency of Windows is part of a redesign of Windows 10, and the results can be seen with the release of the update, codenamed Sun Valley, scheduled for October. Microsoft did not officially share details of the changes planned for Sun Valley, but a job listing found earlier this year hinted at a “radical Windows visual update.” Details of the new features and changes in the Sun Valley update are expected to be available at the upcoming Build developer conference later this month.
