Last year, ZTE distinguished itself with the Axon 20 5G smartphone – it became the first in the world with a front camera hidden under the screen, but it took pictures logo. And now, last year’s Axon 20 5G has received the successor to the Axon 30 5G – with improved technical characteristics and a second-generation sub-screen camera.
Let’s start with improved performance. The Axon 30 5G features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G SoC and a 6.92-inch 10-bit AMOLED screen with FHD + resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. On the back is a quad-camera – with a 64MP main module, an 8MP 120 ° ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP macro module, and an additional sensor for estimating the scene’s depth. The built-in battery has a capacity of 4200 mAh, and there is support for fast charging with a capacity of up to 55 W. The device is offered in several versions with 6/8/12 GB of RAM and 128/256 UFS 3.1 flash memory.
Now the most interesting improvement is the second generation of the subscreen camera. The technology involves the use of special transparent materials in the area of the screen above the camera. These materials have appeared relatively recently and are still inferior in quality to the available display technology. ZTE says the Axon 30 doubles the pixel density in this area, from 200 PPI to 400 PPI. This should eliminate the perforation in the screen that was observed in the original model.
ZTE also says it has improved the sub-screen camera itself.
The Axon 20 tests showed that despite the decent resolution – the camera has a 32MP sensor – even in daylight, the smartphone’s camera shoots very poorly, blurring objects and losing all details. In terms of quality, this camera, which was a significant achievement, was far inferior to conventional front cameras.
Judging by the live photos of the novelty and examples of images published by the well-known insider Ice Universe, the Axon 30 5G situation has improved markedly.

But for conclusions, of course, it is worth waiting for full reviews. And here, clearly, one should not harbor excessive illusions – the photo above was taken outdoors with a lot of light. In response to a Twitter user’s suggestion to try the camera in more difficult conditions, Ice Universe said that “the performance is useless.”
Another photo of the Axon 30 5G from Ice Universe convinces that the camera under the display is visible when the screen is off, although this no longer matters much.
