The New York Times bought the game Wordle

The publisher paid seven figures for the popular word game. The exact value of the deal was not disclosed. Wordle is a daily word puzzle that has taken the internet by storm. It has millions of daily users, according to The New York Times. As a daily word game, Wordle also competes with The New York Times crossword puzzle.

Wordle creator Josh Wardle said that his “game is bigger than I ever imagined” and added that he is “just one person”.

“It’s important to me that as Wordle grows, it continues to please everyone,” Wardle tweeted. “Given that, I’m incredibly happy to announce that I have reached an agreement with The New York Times to take over Wordle’s operations going forward.”

Wardle has assured players that the game will remain free-to-play and that he is working with The Times to ensure that game sessions are preserved when ownership changes.

The New York Times reported that its games were played over 500 million times last year, with 1 million games released as of December 2021.

“The Times strives to entertain more users every day, especially during these troubling times,” the company said in a statement Monday. “Wordle will be a free-to-play game for new and existing players and no changes will be made to the gameplay.”

Wordle has a new five-letter word every day and you have to guess the answer in 6 attempts. The squares will turn yellow if you guess the correct letter but in the wrong place, or green if the correct letter is in the right place. Gray rectangles mean that there are no letters in the word at all. We have a great guide on how to play Wordle.
