About the transfer of Tesla headquarters from California to Texas head of the company Elon Musk announced at the annual meeting of shareholders on October 7.
Tesla is now headquartered in Palo Alto, California, close to the first San Carlos office and the first Fremont plant.
“I am pleased to announce that we are moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas.”

In May 2020, Elon Musk had a conflict with the Alameda County authorities over quarantine restrictions – the mayor’s office did not allow Tesla’s main plant to return to work. Then Tesla filed a lawsuit, calling the authorities’ decision irrational and inexplicable, and Elon Musk threatened to move the company’s headquarters from California to Nevada or Texas. Before that, within the framework of a quarterly report, the head of Tesla sharply criticized the authorities for tough quarantine ones – he called the requirements of mandatory universal self-isolation “fascist” and “undemocratic”, and also called for “returning people their damn freedom.” At the end of 2020, the richest man in the world sold out all real estate in California, and moved to live in Texas, where the new SpaceX plant and the SpaceX launch site are being built – the same Starbase where Super Heavy and Starship are assembled. Then the entrepreneur said that Silicon Valley “is not the same.” By the way, there is no state income tax in Texas, while California has one of the highest rates in the country.
Elon Musk noted that despite the move, Tesla will continue to expand its business in California – the company plans to increase the production capacity of the main plant in Fremont in California and the Gigafactory in Nevada, where batteries are produced, by one and a half times.
This time, Musk did not criticize the authorities, noting only that Tesla “went as far into the Bay Area (the Bay Area in San Francisco) as possible.” He added that many employees cannot afford housing in Silicon Valley and are forced to travel to work from afar, and Tesla could become more competitive in Austin.
The head of Tesla did not specify the timing and did not say exactly where the headquarters of his company will be located. But it is obvious that it will be located near the Giga Texas plant, since Musk, in his speech, again announced his intention to turn this place into an “ecological paradise”.
Giga Texas is Tesla’s second American car manufacturing plant. Construction of the plant began in Austin, Texas in late 2020 and is now progressing as scheduled. The Model Y line should be operational by the end of 2021. Giga Texas will also start producing Cybertruck armored trucks, Model 3 sedans for the US East Coast and Tesla Semi tractors next year.
In the third quarter of 2021, Tesla set a new sales record with 241,300 vehicles shipped to customers, while simultaneously surpassing the 2 million vehicle shipped milestone.
