Analytical company SensorTower has published statistics of the most popular mobile applications in the world for January 2021.

Last quarter, Telegram became the leader among non-gaming apps, displacing TikTok from the first position. In January, users downloaded and installed Telegram 63 million times, which is 3.8 times more than in January last year.

TikTok comes in second with 62 million installs. Signal, Facebook, and WhatsApp rounded out the top five. Please note that the privacy scandal heavily impacted WhatsApp results. In December, WhatsApp took third place in both the overall standings and the individual iOS and Android rankings. And in November, the app took the lead in the overall Android standings.

Signal did not make it into the top ten of December in all three categories. However, Telegram and Signal are examples of how users respond to WhatsApp’s attempts to implement a new privacy policy.

WhatsApp updated its privacy policy on January 6, 2021. Also, the company announced that users must accept the new terms by February 8th. Otherwise, you will lose access to the service. However, after receiving numerous negative reviews from users and criticism from the industry, the WhatsApp team decided to postpone adopting the rules by 3 months (until May 15).

Telegram previously reported that 100 million users joined the messenger in January. Pavel Durov called what is happening:

“The largest digital migration in human history.”
