Sony has officially unveiled the Airpeak S1 drone, first shown at CES 2021. This device is aimed at the professional video market.

The Sony Airpeak S1 drone is designed to work with Sony mirrorless cameras, including the A7S Mark III, FX3, and Alpha 1. The camera mounts to a special version of the Gremsy T3 gimbal, designed exclusively for use with the drone. At the same time, both the camera and the suspension will have to be purchased separately. The drone’s autonomous flight duration is 22 minutes, and with the addition of a camera, this figure drops to 12 minutes. It is also worth noting that the camera needs its own batteries. A drone does not power it.

One of the main strengths of the Sony Airpeak S1 drone is its stability and wind resistance. According to the manufacturer, the device can remain stable in winds up to 20 m / s (double what DJI points out for the Inspire 2). The novelty is equipped with five sets of stereo cameras and an infrared rangefinder. These components are designed to help you avoid colliding with obstacles.

The drone is also fast and dynamic. It can accelerate from 0 to 50 mph (about 80 km / h) in just 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 55.9 mph (about 90 km / h). But in this case, we are talking about flying without any devices. Sony did not provide the same data when flying with a camera onboard.

The Airpeak S1 drone can only be controlled with the included controller, but Sony also has an Airpeak Flight app that helps keep things simple. Currently, the app is only for iOS / iPadOS. It allows you to control the camera and gimbal. One person can operate the drone, but there is also an operating mode for two operators. In this case, one person controls the flight, and the other controls the camera. Sony says the controller’s range is still being tested.

The Sony Airpeak S1 drone will go on sale for $ 9,000. The package includes two pairs of propellers, a controller, two batteries, and a charger. Recall that the Gremsy T3 camera and gimbal will have to be purchased separately. Sony plans to start shipping this model in the fall. In addition, it is reported that the company will offer a service plan to cover damage that may arise as a result of disruptions. Sony has repeatedly noted that the Airpeak S1 is designed and manufactured in Japan.
