Sony Group Corporation and Sony Corporation have created an environmentally friendly and sustainable paper material called “Original Blended Material” based on bamboo, sugarcane, and recycled paper, the raw material of which is strictly controlled.
Original Blended Material is a strong, durable, recyclable paper material that does not use plastic. The novelty was used for the manufacture of packaging for wireless TWS-headphones with noise-canceling Sony WF-1000XM4. The material does not require additional coloring since the role of dyes is played by various shades of the raw material itself. Sony intends to use Original Blended Material for several other projects in the future.
- Bamboo is a short-growing plant similar to sugarcane in many ways. For production, only the required number of stems is selected and cut, and the entire forest area is not cut down, as is done, for example, with conifers. In this way, the sustainable life cycle of the bamboo forest is maintained, and the impact on nature is reduced.
- Sugarcane. For the manufacture of new material, sugarcane cake, which remains in the processing process, is also used. Usually, most of it is burned as fuel to generate electricity, which results in carbon dioxide emissions. However, adding an ingredient to the Original Blended Material allows the plant to become a renewable raw material. Only sugarcane cake that grows in the fields within a radius of 100 km from Nakhonsawan, Thailand, is used to produce the material.
- Waste paper. Original Blended Material is created with sustainability in mind and uses recycled paper to make it. In this case, the material is purchased in the same place where the packaging from the Original Blended Material is made. The combination of waste paper with bamboo and sugarcane fibers increases the strength of the resulting material. In addition, it allows you to create a unique design by matching the color of the recycled paper without the need to add dyes.
Original Blended Material is both strong and durable material and can be used for a variety of needs. Changing the ratio of ingredients can be shaped in different ways, which makes it more versatile in use. Specifically, Original Blend Material is used to pack the Sony WF-1000XM4 Wireless TWS Noise Canceling Headphones, making them completely recyclable without the need for sorting.
Since the novelty is suitable for embossing, this opens up new possibilities for improving the environmental friendliness of packaging by applying inscriptions and symbols without dyes.
Through developments such as Original Blended Material, Sony is supporting the use of plastic-free packaging. Initiatives like these help “eliminate the use of plastic in the packaging of new small-sized products,” which is a medium-term environmental goal outlined in the company’s corporate strategy “Green Management 2025”.
