Summary

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is an excellent smartwatch if you’re an Android user and builds upon the original’s success. The slim and lighter design and also fitness and health features make it an excellent all-around smartwatch. Battery life is decent for the LTE variant; the display is galaxy watch 3 to smooth and responsive. Some third-party apps are still pretty lacklustre, and charging is not so much fast. Overall you will not regret to get this Samsung galaxy watch 3.

The new watch from Samsung has become an excellent continuation of the Watch line. Everything about them is good – and they look great, and there are many functions. True, we also found a drawback.

Samsung Galaxy Watch3 review: an updated classic

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 has become a logical continuation of the Watch line: a classic round watch with ample opportunities and a corresponding price. After a couple of weeks of use, we are ready to share our impressions.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Design and display

The clock really looks like a clock—classic, expensive ones with a leather strap. The controls are two buttons on the right and a rotating bezel. And, of course, the touch screen itself. Depending on the watch’s diameter, it can be 1.2 inches (in the 41 mm case) or 1.4 (in the 45 mm version). The resolution is the same, 360 * 360. The brightness is sufficient for any situation: what could be better than AMOLED!

A large number of dials have been invented, and there are even developments of third-party companies. So the screen contents can be anything: from imitation of strict chronometers to cheerful colours. There are several types of dials in the watch. Others will need to be installed through the application (more on that later).

Moreover, you can customize the dials themselves: some have only the colour of letters and numbers, others – to choose the windows’ parameters’ value and design.

Looking ahead, the rotating bezel is incredibly easy to navigate, especially in our coronavirus realities in 2020, when it is advised to wear gloves even in summer. To access notifications, move the wheel slightly to the left. Moving to the right goes through the widgets. By the way, you can add them too – for example, a weather widget.

Interestingly (and importantly), the watch supports displaying not only text but also photos. If you were sent a picture via a messenger, you would see it in miniature – budget watches cannot do this yet.

It is unlikely that you will have to choose one case size from two possible for a long time. If you have a thin wrist, 45mm will be too bulky. At the same time, the 41mm strap will hardly converge on a thick man’s wrist.

The device is protected according to the IP68 standard, is not afraid of water and dust, withstands water pressure of 5 ATM. Plus, it meets the military-grade MIL-STD-810G protection standard. That is, with them, you can not only take a shower but also swim in the pool.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Connection

Connecting a device for those who have never used Samsung mobile gadgets is still a quest. First, you need to download the Health app: all statistics will be collected in it. But to connect to the watch and configure it, you need one more thing – Samsung Wearable. That, in turn, will send you twice to the app store for plugins. Each software, of course, needs to be given permissions. By the end of the installation, this is so annoying that you can unobtrusively slip a contract with the devil, and 90% of users will agree with it.

Another oddity is that the watch has to be manually connected periodically after the connection is lost. For example, if you left your smartphone in the car and went to the store with the watch in your hands, or simply rebooted your phone, the watch may turn off. And outwardly, you will not notice this in any way. To reconnect them, you need to go to the Samsung Wearable app. It’s a shame – the author missed a bunch of notifications when the smartphone was in silent mode.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Filling and functions

The watch runs on Tizen 5.5. At its heart is an Exynos 9110 dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.15 GHz. Compared to the previous model, the amount of built-in memory has increased (from 4 to 8 GB), the RAM remains the same (1 GB). All this works very quickly. During the test, I never had to face freezes or jams.

Advanced hardware and a huge set of features distinguish Watch 3 from more budget counterparts from other brands. For example, the watch can be used as an independent player by connecting a headset to it via Bluetooth. Or install not just skins, but full-fledged applications, as on an autonomous device. In addition to useful ones (for example, the VK messenger), there are hilarious ones. For example, we downloaded Tetris and tried to play it on a 1.1-inch screen. After a couple of minutes, we decided that this would be an excellent punishment for editors who violate the deadlines for releasing news and new materials—delayed by an hour – 10 minutes. Tetris games on Watch 3!

The new product can monitor sleep, count calories and steps, track the most diverse workouts. It also measures stress levels and blood oxygen levels without problems. But they cannot work with pressure and ECG yet: these functions will appear very soon after the next software update.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Battery

Perhaps the most action-packed chapter in this book. An attempt to use all the benefits of Watch 3 without restrictions led us to an unexpected result: in 12 hours. The battery was discharged by 92%! I had to look for an opportunity to save electricity:

  • reduced brightness from 10 to 7;
  • disabled the “Always on” display mode:
  • set heart rate monitoring from constant to “once every 10 minutes”.

I must say it helped, but not much. Charging was enough for a day, which is also not to say that a decent result. After all, we did not use either the training regime or listening to music. You can also turn off location detection if you’re exercising indoors – another right food item.

Charging for Watch 3 is wireless. Once a day, you need to find a couple of hours to replenish the battery to 100%. The only question is when to do it. Not at night, because sleep monitoring is interesting, not during working hours when notifications are actively received on the clock, not after work when you walk on a treadmill or wind kilometres in the park But somehow it is necessary.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Bottom line: is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 worth buying?

The new watch turned out to be expectedly cool. They look really premium and will easily compete with the Apple Watch in terms of the set of features (after a quick update). Moreover, unlike Apple watches, they are suitable for both Android and iPhone smartphones.

The only problem is, well, a very modest reserve of autonomy. And this is not only our experience: they write about it in almost every review on the watch page of the samsung.com website. Battery life can be increased by limiting yourself in functions, but then what to pay from $329.99 for?

The smartwatch market is actively growing: just a few days ago, Huawei presented its Watch GT2 Pro with a titanium case and autonomy of 2 weeks. We also hope to get them for the test shortly. In the meantime, read our selection of the best smartwatches: there are many exciting things too.
