I remember well how Android tablets produced both big-name brands and small brands at one time, but after a few years, the market has changed a lot. Now the choice is not great, but it is not surprising: on the one hand, Apple is pressing very tightly with the iPad of all stripes. On the other – Android smartphones with large screens.
Nevertheless, the market for Android tablets exists. Samsung releases new products every year. Today, we will talk about the Galaxy Tab S7 Fan Edition, replacing the Tab S6 Lite. On its side is the balance of price and characteristics: this is a tablet with a large screen, an impressive battery, a SIM card, and an electronic pen included.
There is nothing extraordinary in the tablet’s design: a large screen, thin frames, a very moderate thickness. The Galaxy Tab S7 Fan Edition weighs 608 grams – you can’t call it light if you want to, but for a device with an almost 13-inch screen, this is normal. For example, iPad Pro 12.9 weighs even more – 682 grams. However, they do not compete directly, these are devices of different levels, but you can compare their sizes. After all, the diagonals coincide. The main thing is that it is inconvenient to hold the Galaxy Tab S7 Fan Edition with one hand. It is unpleasant to constantly walk around with fears of “about to drop,” so this is a 100% two-handed tablet. I say this with an eye to those who plan to take it with them. In my opinion, this is primarily a home or office device, albeit a mobile one.
I had the urge to carry the tablet in my backpack, but it quickly disappeared after several hours of using the device in the office. Putting the Galaxy on the table and watching the video while you have breakfast is ok, but imagining how you ride the subway with it, standing in the car and trying to hold it is not ok. Still, it’s not for nothing that tablets gradually disappear, giving way to phones with large screens.
The brushed black aluminum body is easily fingerprinted, but this is common. Here a tablet in a silver version will be more practical – on a light case. Traces should not be so striking. There will also be green and pink – it’s great that we were not limited to black only.
In general, the assembly is excellent, and I suggest evaluating the dimensions and weight of the device yourself before buying. In my opinion, devices with screens of about 10.5-11 inches are more compact and more convenient, more mobile. But if you want to kill two birds with one stone and replace your old laptop with a tablet, then there will be no questions.
Unlike the older and more expensive Tab S7 with AMOLED, the S7 FE has a simpler screen. It has a high resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and a 16:10 ratio. But this is TFT-IPS, so the black is not that black. However, not everyone is sitting in the dark and comparing the glow of the backlight.
Considering the device’s price, I think this can be survived because the rest of the picture is pleasant: bright, without distortion, although the viewing angles are not maximum. In my opinion, tablets with a 4: 3 screen are better for surfing the Internet, drawing or reading, but suddenly you really plan to work on the device. Then it will be more convenient to use multi-window on Samsung, at the same time you can remember about watching a video. Interestingly, the company is positioning the device as a thing for creators and creative individuals, but in this case, a widescreen display is not the most logical decision.
With a tablet in hand, you can go out into the street: the Tab S7 Fan Edition confidently behaves in the sun at the maximum brightness level. It discharges in this mode, of course, faster, but the summer is short, and you want to stay outside longer.
The colors are normal by default, so there are no additional settings in the menu. But a separate night mode is provided when the image acquires a yellowish tint – it is believed that this reduces the load on the eyes in the evening.
The tablet will be sold in two trim levels: 4/64 GB of memory and 6/128 GB. Of course, I advise you of the second option, because taking into account the high-resolution screen and the gluttony of applications, the basic version will soon be lacking. There is also a slot for a microSD memory card up to 1 TB.
The average-powered tablet achieves the usual benchmark results: the numbers are lower for measurement lovers. I had a version with 4 GB of RAM. It feels like there is never a lot of memory: the menu does not always respond instantly. There are pauses and delays.
It copes well with throttling. There is no noticeable drop in performance after a series of three stress tests.
Tablet with a nanoSIM card slot, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, and Bluetooth 5.0 support, GPS with GLONASS is also supported if you decide to use the device for navigation.
The security issue is solved: there is no fingerprint scanner, so use either face unlock or a password.
The tablet is equipped with an S Pen. It’s cool that it is included in the basic package, and you don’t need to pay separately for it. You can draw, write by hand, add comments, cut and paste texts, navigate menus – all this has long been familiar from Samsung devices.
The stylus is magnetized to the body, keeps tight, and will not fall off accidentally. And yes, the stylus does not need to be charged – as long as it is magnetized to the body, it recharges automatically. Naturally, the S Pen connects via Bluetooth. The response is fast and lag-free. When you draw or write, you get the impression that you have an ordinary pen in your hand. This is a pleasant feeling.
You can appreciate the advantages of the stylus in the Samsung Notes application: you make a handwritten note and then send it with a picture or a Word file.
For me, the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack in the tablet is not a problem at all: I have been sitting tightly on wireless for several years. Stereo speakers are located on the sides. They play nicely: support for Dolby Atmos, AKG specialists helped in setting up. The quality is excellent. The tablet plays music loudly, not too high quality to replace a separate small speaker, but just right for watching videos.
The front camera is of normal quality and is suitable for conferences in Zoom. The main camera does not fail either: you can shoot and recognize a document, but you don’t need to create masterpieces from a tablet. Photography is not the strongest side of the tablet. Classmate phones make better shots.
Example for the main camera:
The battery in the tablet is just what you need: Samsung claims up to 13 hours of playtime in 720p video playback. I set the brightness to an average level and launched a YouTube video in maximum quality – in this mode, the tablet sat down by 8-9% in an hour, pretty well. According to my feelings, one charge is enough for three or even four days if you use the device at home in the evenings to watch videos or read.
The tablet comes with a 15W charger, and if you want to charge it faster, you can buy a 45W power adapter. Otherwise, charging takes about four hours, so it is more practical to leave the tablet by the outlet at night before going to bed.
Why Samsung cannot make the Type-C connector clearly in the center is a big mystery to me. Some perfectionist nightmare.
Conclusion: Should you buy Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE?
The tablet has enough strengths: it works for a long time, it has a high-quality screen, it has a slot for a memory card and a SIM card, loudspeakers, an S Pen stylus in the kit – you don’t have to buy it if you are fond of graphics or appreciate handwritten notes.
At the same time, I would like to get more RAM in the basic version – after all, 4 GB is not enough by the standards of 2021. I want to use a more compact tablet, but this is already a matter of taste. For example, if you rarely take it out of the house and use it on a stand at home, there are no questions. But if you plan to take it with you and work with it on weight – in this case, it is heavy. Therefore, I advise you to go to the store and evaluate the tablet live.
