Will the rest of the 2021 flagships be catching up, or is Samsung already out of date?
The traditional January presentation of Samsung Unpacked allowed the public to spend a couple of monthly salaries on several new smartphones and many accessories: from the newly invented Buds headphones to NFC tags and stylus covers. New products have already been in our hands and, believe me; there is something to talk about. And no, not just about missing out-of-the-box chargers and headphones.
It so happened that the previous year was not only under the auspices of the fight against coronavirus. In the mobile industry, the idea of “Let’s do as Honor” has firmly stuck in designers’ heads for the whole year. And it was with honor V30 Pro began the mass distribution of the new camera design.
It could be seen at Samsung in last year’s lineup, onePlus, and the vast majority of smartphone manufacturers from the Celestial Empire. Well, a fairly simple solution – to cover all the cameras with one dark glass and not much to think further over the location of the elements under it. About the fact that all this beauty will be scratched as not in itself, no one immediately thought. And it is not necessary to protect manufacturers. The same glass from Gorilla Glass is still scratched almost on the air. Sapphire glass? Haha.
And on this sad note, out of nowhere appears Samsung and begins to show tricks. New camera design does not want? And not like everyone else, but his own, special. Which can’t even be compared to anything. Except with some old nocturia models. Very uncharacteristic bends and shapes for a mass product in 2021.
It seems that we are gradually returning to long-forgotten times when product design could not be developed with the help of combinations of keys Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. To some extent, it has a health effect on the industry as a whole. Of course, if it doesn’t start to copy mercilessly in a couple of months.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: New Design
Along with the new flagships in the face of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung has shown and Exynos 2100 – the main chip of the company for the current generation of top devices. To be more precise, the chip was shown shortly before today’s presentation – on January 12.
The most interesting thing about the chip is its design. Instead of the one used in the Exynos 990,” Samsung decided to do it more relevant (hello, Snapdragon 888). The top chip from the South Korean giant combines a single performance core Arm Cortex-X1 with a frequency of 2.9 GHz, three cores Cortex-A78 and four energy-efficient cores Cortex-A55. Yes, a similar structure is used in the main processor from Qualcomm.
In theory, this gives a performance increase of as much as 30 percent when compared to a new chip with not the most successful Exynos 990. But marketing promises are still marketing promises. Performance and “voraciousness” of new products we will check a little later, already in a full review of devices. In the meantime, we rejoice in the chips that “brought” the new processor.
For example, the chip now supports cameras with a resolution of up to 200 megapixels. What for? And because the harsh engineers from Samsung can. Only here in none of the presented smartphones, such sensors do not exist. Come on, let’s assume it’s a setback for the future. Of the beneficial things, you can note the chip’s ability to process information from four camera sensors simultaneously. That’s the thing for computational photography.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S21 more convenient than the previous generation?
More likely, yes than no. I’m not a fan of curved screens, and the previous generation was trying to flirt with it. Now the screens are flat, and the visual and tactile volume is achieved thanks to the smooth slants on the glass itself. The frames around the display have also changed a bit. They are the same size, both on the sides and top. The frame framing of the body has also changed. To the touch above all praise – just like in the Xperia 5 II. Because of such a framework around the perimeter, when using, there is a pleasant feeling of the monolithic body, so it is a separate plus in designers’ karma. And, yes, it applies to all the smartphones presented.
Without a ruler, you won’t know if there are differences in size between generations. In the hand of the S21 and S21, they lie about the same as the S20 with their older brother. The noticeable difference I felt with the Ultra version. The new generation feels more reliable. I know it’s a strange description, but the same back panel in the S20 Ultra seems at times “slightly” plastic and not as durable.
A separate plus for the new Contour Cut camera design. It would seem a small thing. But no, it’s a serious thing at a time when we often evaluate smartphones for the capabilities of their cameras. Agree, unpleasant when over a cool sensor in your smartphone, there are scratches. And in the service, this will not go, because it is stupid to change the glass because of some offensive scratch. Meanwhile, the quality of the photos drops, scratches become more. And Samsung seems to have found a way to solve the problem, which they themselves created.
The camera module itself has changed little in its size (the height has remained the same), but the lenses’ location has changed relative to the plane of the hull. Almost like Note 20, yes. Now the glass is pressed inside the case, which naturally protects its surface from most external influences.
The main device is the Galaxy S21 Ultra
So a strange smartphone that is not quite representative of the mainline. Most likely, something closer to the Note, but on one condition. For such unexpected transformations, you must have a stylus S Pen. And the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports it. Even a slightly strange case with notches under S Pen was presented. Here it is, in the photo below. See the strange thickening of the frame on the left? It is in it and stored the stylus.
To some extent, it is even good that the stylus is not originally included. Want to make your smartphone a representative of the Note line? We bought one of two variants of S Pen: regular or with gesture support in the air. Well, if you do not find this miracle of technology a useful application, you can easily sell it.
And now about what can really become an argument when buying. The “Ultra” almost doubled the area of the fingerprint scanner. And as long as the owners of Samsung will unlock their devices with convenience and in the way you like, all Sony owners with a side scanner will suffer. The speed and accuracy of unlocking here will be a long time to impress during use truly.
I’ll reveal the details of how and what optics Samsung uses to convey an unforgettable and, of course, certainly immersive user experience, but the support of taking photos in 12-bit RAW is very cool. It’s not bloggers with vloggers to please support 4K video from 60 k/s to the front camera.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: What about the usual “galaxies”?
In short, it’s still an excellent flagship device is finally nice cases and with a ton of software chips that gives the local shell. Galaxy devices also have a seamless connection within a full ecosystem and fast displays to introduce to the flagships – excellent, no questions. But all this is given by the company’s previous smartphones. And is it worth buying them at the start, when there are still relevant Galaxy S20/S20 and Galaxy S20 FE?
Let’s say you liked the design of the usual S21. And now you are ready to order a new smartphone because money for you is almost no problem. Now answer one question for yourself. How often do you wear a smartphone in a case? If you do, take the S20/S20 FE. You won’t notice any difference in millimeters. The body itself will not be often looked at. And software chips, the same fast and bright displays will not go away from you. Only get a much lower price. Or wait six months and buy in the summer, the price has to fall a little. Unless, of course, the ruble exchange rate starts to surprise us unpleasantly.
