In this article, we will read about JBL GO 3 Review. The JBL GO 3 portable speaker made a positive impression on me. It looks stylish, is protected from water and dust, is easy to operate, and sounds good, but what else is needed from such a gadget?

I did not find a single drawback. Moreover, besides the lack of a function for switching to the previous track, I do not even know what to catch to gain at least a couple of points to compose the review’s negative side.

The JBL GO 3 wireless speaker represents that successful combination of the competent work of an engineer and a designer, where practicality is ideally combined with a stylish yet functional appearance.

The side edges are covered with small rubberized inserts that frame the USB-C socket and hinge on one side and the power and pairing buttons on the other.

The entire remaining area is completely covered with a special material that resembles a plastic fabric to the touch. It is durable, immovable, but at the same time acoustically transparent and allows at the same time to protect the delicate driver from environmental influences and at the same time have almost no effect on the sound of the gadget.

The front side has the JBL logo on the fabric, and a rubber ribbed insert is attached to the back so that the speaker can be laid flat on the surface so that it won’t slip or roll.

On the top, there are buttons:

  • Volume control
  • A multifunctional button that starts and stops music playback and switches tracks forward when double-pressed

JBL GO 3 does not have any additional functionality, but this is its advantage – it is just a compact portable speaker that can fit in the palm of a man’s palm and at the same time sound convincing and work for a long time.

When testing some wireless speakers, you must understand the multi-stage complex and confusing control for a long time in additional functions and features. Simultaneously, the JBL GO 3 reflects the ideology of “Plug and forget,” it just works.

The JBL GO 3 column has a certificate of protection against water IP67, which means that the gadget is completely protected from dust and sand and can withstand short-term full immersion underwater.

Thanks to its protection, the JBL GO 3 is ideal for taking it with you to the beach, forest, or park on vacation without worrying about accidental splashing or wind-blown dust.

Moreover, even if the column gets dirty, it doesn’t matter. It can be washed under running water without fear of damaging the internal elements.

The manufacturer claims 5 hours of continuous operation at about 60% of the maximum volume. I listened to the column for several days in a row for an average of one hour during testing. The battery was discharged after about 4 hours and 50 minutes of use. If we add the waiting time to this, we will see that the manufacturer has even been modest, and at an average volume, JBL GO 3 can work longer than the stated five hours.

At maximum volume, the operating time will be reduced to about 2.5 hours.

It will take about 2.5 hours to charge the battery fully.

Column JBL GO 3 does not have built-in smart features. It is designed for one purpose – to play music, so gadget control is effortless.

On the side, there is a “Power” button, by clicking on which you can turn on or off the gadget.

Below is the “Bluetooth” button, designed to activate the pairing mode, connect to another sound source.

There is also a LED that signals the battery charge level.

There are volume control buttons and a universal “Play” button at the top, which starts and stops playing music and switches the music to the next track by double-clicking. Triple pressing to switch to the previous track does not lead.

During testing, I connected the JBL GO 3 column to the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE phone, which is equipped with a Bluetooth 5 module, while the GO 3 is equipped with the latest version of the Bluetooth 5.1 protocol. Also connected to a Sennheiser BT-100 Bluetooth transmitter, which is equipped with a Bluetooth 4.2 module.

I connected to both the smartphone and the JBL GO 3 transmitter without problems, and it worked, but I noticed some nuances. Although they say that the Bluetooth protocol is backward compatible, and this is true, it is still better to have the most recent version of it on both devices…

The main difference between connecting to Mi 9 SE and BT-100 was the audio output delay when watching videos on YouTube. When connected to the BT-100, the delay is more pronounced. It is about half a second, it becomes noticeable, and it is inconvenient to watch long videos.

Simultaneously, while connecting to the phone, the delay became noticeably less, although it did not disappear at all. But in this case, it is even possible to watch movies, the delay will not annoy you, and perhaps some will not even notice it.

JBL GO 3 uses only the SBC codec. It is not scary for such a portable speaker; the codec cannot affect the sound quality. It is limited by the miniature size of the gadget driver, but more on that below.

JBL GO 3 Review: Sound quality

The JBL GO 3 speaker is equipped with one wideband driver with a membrane size of 43 x 47 mm / 1.5 ″ and a power of 4.2 W (RMS).

The declared frequency range is from 110 Hz to 20 kHz.

Before talking about the sound, let’s remember the very miniature size of the speaker case. It easily fits into a man’s palm, and, as you know, size matters in the case of sound.

However, JBL engineers were miraculously able to tune the sound of GO 3 so that it remained as clear as possible and without critical blockages at different frequencies.

And, indeed, when you turn on the GO 3 for the first time, you are surprised how such a miniature gadget can reproduce sound without gurgling at medium frequencies and even with noticeable low frequencies, which are cut at a frequency close to 110 Hz.

I also note that the speaker can sound very loud, capable of sounding a typical living room. Simultaneously, even at maximum volume, there is no wheezing, sound blocking, or other parasitic phenomena.

At a volume level of about 30%, the mids are slightly muffled. The sound seems soft, even velvety.

Upon reaching about 50% of the maximum, the middle frequencies are straightened, the low frequencies gain elasticity, there is even an attempt to play the punch of percussion instruments qualitatively.

At a volume above 70% of the maximum, the middle frequencies take away most of the attention, the sound becomes sharper, roughness appears, and small details disappear from the sound.

At any volume, the speaker vibrates noticeably when playing sound, and at a volume above 70%, you can feel it with your hands and see it.

In general, if I sum up the sound of JBL GO 3, I would note its high quality and unexpectedly high volume. One should not expect Hi-Fi sound from such a miniature device, but in its niche, the speaker clearly claims to be the leader in 2020.
