In general, I decided to look at what is happening in the world of Windows laptops. And I was stunned: what is going on there? No, I understand that now there is a crisis. The dollar is fragile, but why can’t you find a laptop with a display of 15.6-16 inches weighing less than two kilograms? The market turned out to be free, and Huawei skillfully entered it with its MateBook D 16, filling this vacant place: here there is a 16-inch screen and a weight of 1.72 kg. The display increase to 16 inches was quite logical: the dimensions remained comparable to 15.6-inch computers, and a larger screen with comparable dimensions is always perceived much better. It is worth mentioning here that the predecessors of the MateBook D 14 and D 15.

The laptop is quite light. It feels good in the hands: after all, aluminum’s choice for the case material is a good decision. But let’s finally open it up.

Huawei MateBook D 16: Display and Screen

It’s nice to look at devices that don’t try to over-protrude. The MateBook D 16 does not attract too much attention: the design is minimalist and allows you to concentrate on work comfortably.

The display is awe-inspiring. More precisely, it was beaten: this is a large 16-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution. I wish it were more so as not to see the pixels, but in the Windows world, such things are not very popular since such a device’s cost will rise very much.

Lenovo introduced the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 laptop.

The display impresses with its narrow 4.9mm bezels and 90% of the bezel it occupies. The matrix was supplied by the Taiwanese company Chimei Innolux. It is an eight-bit screen that displays SDR content.

Initially, my sample rendered the colors too warm. My colleagues usually write that the laptop received certified blue filtering according to the TÜV Rheinland standard, but I just missed the blue. Therefore, I went into the settings and began to adjust the display’s display, choosing cold shades. In my opinion, this made the picture more natural.

The screen of the Matebook D 16 is matte. I know that there will be amateurs and opponents of such coatings, but in this case, it is worth taking such a screen as a fact.

Huawei MateBook D 16: Camera

The large display and narrow bezels led to a forced compromise with the camera. It, as in many Huawei models, is located in the button between F6 and F7:

Huawei MateBook D 16 Keyboard

The angle is not the most joyful for many, but a lot depends on your posture’s relaxation.

It is clear that the quality is not the best, but this is not required from laptop cameras.

Keyboard, Touchpad, and Fingerprint Reader

If you like keyboards without long key travel, then the Huawei MateBook D 16 is your choice. This keyboard fits me. The keys descend evenly. There are no strong bends in any of the corners.

This is a full-size keyboard, and I really like it: you will not miss and press other keys, as is the case with laptop keyboards, where the engineers decided that it was just necessary to fit the number pad by reducing the size of the keys.

In many places, they write that there is no key backlighting. I do not believe it is there. And here it is two-level:

Huawei MateBook D 16

The trackpad here is without imitation of pressing- It is downright pressed. If you have used more expensive devices with a vibration motor that simulates pressing, you will need to get used to it. However, if you are used to laptops in which the left key is pressed exclusively in the lower-left corner, and the right key is in the lower right, everything will suit you. Moreover, the trackpad responds well to finger movements, which, by the way, are nice to slide on the surface.

Huawei has added a fingerprint scanner. This is a convenient and quick way to authorize a user. The MateBook D 16 uses a capacitive fingerprint scanner. It works well. I hardly noticed any false positives. Unless I would like to note that Windows stubbornly says that the scanner can be used during a cold start, but it is not. As in smartphones: first, enter the code or password, and only then use your finger to unlock the device.

Huawei MateBook D 16 Speaker

The speakers are located at the edges of the keyboard. I personally did not have enough low end in their sound, but it is worth emphasizing that the speakers are still very loud – they will be enough for watching movies even in a very noisy office.

A laptop has many options for connecting peripherals. On the left side, there is an HDMI port and two Type-C ports through which you can charge this laptop:

On the right are two USB Type-A 3.2, as well as a combined headset jack:

I would note that I would still like the distribution of USB types on both sides. For example, if a right-hander connects a wired mouse, this will be done through the usual Type-A, which leads to the fact that the wire will constantly fall under the arm.

Dell G3 15 3500 Gaming Laptop Review

Huawei MateBook D 16: Performance

The computer received a six-core (12 threads) AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, built on the AMD Zen 2 architecture using a 7-nm process technology. This is a good choice considering that it is designed to compete with the i7-10750H and i5-9300H. The first Ryzen 5 4600H falls short of the first, and the second noticeably overtakes.

The 4600H operates at a base frequency of up to 3 GHz and boosts to 4 GHz. The standard TDP is 45W, but heat dissipation can be reduced to 35W or increased to 54W. The processor comes with 8 MB of cache.

Unfortunately, the laptop received only an integrated card. And this is just one of the reasons why it weighs so little compared to competitors. Therefore, the laptop is not very suitable for games. But if you play the conditional League of Legends, then the computer’s power is enough: at high frame rates, it reaches 130 fps. And, which is very nice, the computer copes calmly even without a connected power supply.

Dirt 4 at medium graphics settings at Full HD produced a solid 45 frames. Sometimes it sagged up to 37, but this happened very rarely. If you choose “ultra” in the graphics settings, then the frame rate will drop to 35 with sagging to 26.

GE76 Raider Dragon Edition Tiamat Laptop

After half an hour of playing on the MateBook D 16, the coolers started up but did not sound very loud. The active cooling seems to be very good here. I played Dirt 4 with a laptop on my lap and a gamepad at least at home, but I didn’t feel any burning discomfort.

By the way, the processor is very cold: the coolers started up at full power only during testing in Cinebench R23. In this benchmark, the Huawei MateBook D 16 scored 7368 in multicore and 1046 in single-core.

The MateBook D 16 comes in two versions: 8/512 or 16/512 GB. The bundled SSD gives excellent results:

But if you are not satisfied with the volume or speed, you can easily replace it with a new one. The maximum supported NVMe PCIe SSD is 2TB.

The RAM is soldered on the board. You won’t be able to update it. It is here of DDR4 type with a frequency of 3200 MHz.

Huawei MateBook D 16: Battery

I didn’t have the laptop in my hands for very long. In fact, I worked with it for two full working days. From 1 pm to 7 pm, the laptop worked quietly without plugging into an outlet – thanks to the 56.8Wh battery. I have Google Chrome, five or six tabs, Telegram, always one of the open applications. Do not forget about the processor and SSD tests.

If we talk about games, you need to remember that this is not a gaming laptop. However, I installed my favorite Dirt 4, chose medium graphics settings, turned everything off in advanced settings, and started playing. Exactly half an hour of playing – and the battery went from 100% to 69.

Comes with a 65W power supply. 15 minutes at the outlet – and the charge is enough for two hours of work. Here I want to praise Huawei for this power supply: the company does not follow the Windows laptops market, which has a wire, then a power supply, and again a wire. Instead, the D 16, like smartphones and other Huawei laptops, has a power supply combined with a plug. Conveniently!

Huawei MateBook D 16: Huawei Share

Huawei continues to develop its theme with the device ecosystem. One of the options is Huawei Share. It allows you to use the company’s smartphone directly from your computer. This requires a Huawei or Honor smartphone with NFC.

The most recent version of Huawei Share allows you to open three Windows interface windows at once, but this requires version EMUI 11.0 or Magic UI 4.0 with at least 6 GB of RAM. PC Manager, which launches Huawei Share, must be updated to at least the eleventh version.

The connection is simple. First, you need to launch PC Manager on your computer and go to the “Phone” tab:

Click on “Connect.” A window will appear explaining what exactly needs to be done:

The NFC tag in a particular laptop model is located under the touchpad. To sync, you need to bring the unlocked smartphone to the touchpad. Then notifications will appear on the smartphone:

After that, indicate on the computer that the smartphone can be trusted, and the magic begins! You can download files to your computer without additional connections. You can run conditional WhatsApp on your computer without sending codes, reading QR codes, or whatever perversions the messenger developers have come up with.

Use cases can be absolutely any because, in fact, everything that you do on a smartphone can now be done on a laptop. Even take pictures!

Huawei MateBook D 16: Price

If you choose a Windows laptop from the price range of about $900, then your eyes will most likely fall on laptops with Ryzen 5 4600H, as well as i5-9300H and i7-10750H. However, everything that I found on the official market for PCT devices is either more expensive or much heavier.

Huawei Matebook D 16 is sold in two versions:

  • $949 for the 8/512 GB version;
  • $999 for the 16/512 GB version.

As you know, Huawei loves discounts and gifts, so right at the start of sales, along with this laptop, you will also be given a Huawei Matepad T 10 tablet for $149. And now, buying a laptop looks like a very rational decision, since you buy a computer and a tablet for the same price tag.

Huawei MateBook D 16

Conclusion: Should you buy Huawei Matebook D 16?

The Matebook D 16 looks like an enjoyable product: it has a good matte screen, an excellent backlit keyboard, a pleasant touchpad, a powerful processor, and a confident battery, the charge of which is fully replenished in about two hours. It’s also lightweight, quiet, and relatively inexpensive.

Of course, this is not a gaming solution, although you can play not very modern games on it, like the very same “League of Legends” or Dirt 4. However, this is more likely an office solution. And the Huawei Matebook D 16 copes with the tasks set in this segment one hundred percent.
