Rumors that Google is planning to release a foldable device have been circulating for a long time. Now there is new information that Samsung will be producing a foldable screen for the device. The Korean company will begin mass production of foldable OLED panels for customers in October.
According to SamMobile, Google will use Samsung as the display manufacturer for its upcoming foldable device. The foldable phone can be called Google Pixel Fold, and its display will have a diagonal of 7.6 inches. The technology used is likely to be AMOLED with a resolution of at least FHD +, and the aspect ratio could be similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is close to 1: 1.
Google’s foldable smartphone is rumored to be released either late this year or early 2022. The foldable phone will also use Samsung’s ultra-thin glass display.
Google isn’t the only company choosing Samsung for its foldable plans. Xiaomi and Vivo are also sticking to the Korean manufacturer for their foldable devices. Korean media reports that the Vivo device is equipped with an 8-inch screen, while the screen specifications of the Xiaomi phone are still unknown, but the display size will certainly be the same.
Oppo is also sticking with Samsung displays. The company reportedly plans to launch a 7.1-inch device with a Samsung foldable panel and a small 1.5-inch external display, due for release in 2022. Oppo has previously worked with companies like BOE and Visionox to develop foldable prototypes. But the company now fully supports Samsung.
It’s no surprise that so many companies choose Samsung to build foldable displays for their future devices. Samsung is leading the way in foldable technology with the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series.
While the company’s first commercial foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, had problems regarding reliability, Samsung’s new foldable models did not receive such complaints. Samsung has the most expertise in such complex displays, and as the company is renowned for its innovative thinking, we can expect many new technologies to emerge.
Samsung has big plans for its own devices too. The next Galaxy Z Flip should be announced in August with thinner bezels and a two-tone design. The next Galaxy Z Fold should also be unveiled in August. A Korean manufacturer working on a triple-folding device was disclosed in a patent just a few days ago. The device could be called the Galaxy Z Fold Tab and will appear next year.
