Six months after the release on Android and almost two years after iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 with a system-wide dark theme.

The dark theme in Google Maps on iOS will be available worldwide “in the coming weeks.” You can check the availability of the option in the “Settings.” You can enable it in the settings menu in the corresponding item. In a comment to The Verge, a Google spokesperson mentioned the ability to automatically switch between light and dark based on overall system settings.

Google Maps for iOS will get a few more features in August in addition to the dark theme. The app will add widget support with the first two options: one for displaying traffic near the user and the other for personalized shortcuts for the Google Maps search bar and places like home or restaurants nearby. The set of shortcuts is formed based on various factors such as location, saved places, interests, and past searches.

Another Google Maps innovation is iMessage integration to share real-time geolocation with friends using the Google Maps button in the Messages app. By default, access will remain for an hour, but it can be extended for up to three days if desired. You can also stop the exchange of geolocation with this or that person at any time.
