While smartwatch manufacturers have struggled to find a suitable place for smartwatches for years, Apple has largely created this space by focusing on health-related features that simple, smart fitness bands couldn’t offer. This is mainly about measuring and detecting heart disease. Still, a new report suggests that Samsung and Apple may be moving towards a much-needed feature that could save thousands of users from painfully drawing multiple times a day.
One of the medical technology industry’s long-standing dreams is to develop a non-invasive way to measure people’s blood glucose levels. Although there are homemade kits for this, a finger prick must draw a blood sample. This method is cited as one of the main reasons people with diabetes do not regularly monitor their blood sugar levels, which can be fatal.
Verily Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Alphabet, considered using smart contact lenses for this purpose. This process is less painful but still inconvenient for those who have never worn contact lenses. ETNews reports that Samsung and Apple may have finally found the most convenient and painless option of all.
According to the report, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 (read the review here) may have a blood glucose measurement function using an optical sensor to measure blood oxygen levels. Research by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Samsung shows that smartwatches can use Raman spectroscopy, which measures the vibration of molecules of a substance when light hits them.

However, Samsung won’t be alone in this pursuit, as the Apple Watch Series 7 could also have a similar feature, albeit perhaps using a different technology or principle. However, before the potential beneficiaries of these functions get too excited, it should be remembered that these functions still need to get approval from each country’s regulators before they are included there.
