Swiss robotics student Ken Pillonel last year modified a familiar iPhone and equipped it with a USB-C port instead of Lightning. Later, the engineer introduced another interesting device – an Android smartphone with a Lightning connector. Now another modified device has appeared on the Pillonel channel. This time it’s AirPods with a USB-C charging port.

The video begins with a phone call to Apple, where a support person tells Pillonel that it’s “more economical to just replace the case” in case the charging port or battery is damaged.

The engineer made the charging case from scratch, since it is impossible to install in a native USB-C case without damaging it. Pillonel made his projects open source, so anyone, in theory, can repeat his experiment.

The engineer hopes that his development will help give new life to AirPods charging cases.
