DuckDuckGo is working on a privacy-focused desktop browser

DuckDuckGo, known as a provider of a privacy-focused search service, is working on a desktop browser. Like the search engine, DuckDuckGo’s browser will pay particular attention to user privacy issues. It is designed to prevent tracking of user behavior on the web. This is just the latest development from the company focused on privacy.

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg spoke briefly about what to expect from a desktop browser. According to him, it will work in the same way as the mobile version. Weinberg said the desktop browser offers “strong privacy protection” by default. This does not require activating any hidden security settings. The browser will receive a Fire button, one click on which immediately deletes all browsing history, saved data and tabs.

The browser is based on “OS-provided rendering engines” that will allow for a cleaner, uncluttered interface. It is noted that both macOS and Windows have a rendering API (WebView / WebView2) that applications can use to render sites. Gabriel Weinberg, citing early tests, claims the new DuckDuckGo desktop browser is “significantly faster” than Google Chrome.

We’re working on it!

DuckDuckGo desktop browser is currently in closed beta on macOS. According to Weinberg’s Twitter post, the company is also gearing up to launch the app for Windows. But it has not yet been specified when the browser will become publicly available.
