ASUS VY249HE belongs to the category of inexpensive “home-office” monitors. Unlike most of these models, it has a rather unusual feature: the manufacturer has emphasized protecting the user’s eyes.
ASUS VY249HE Monitor: Design
Before us is a fairly typical budget monitor: a minimalistic design, a body made of practical black matte plastic, the front panel is made in a familiar frameless design. The display is covered with protective glass, framed only by a thin line of the case’s side edge. After turning it on, an additional frame around the image on the sides and above becomes noticeable. However, it is quite thin. The bottom of the screen is visually supported by a dark gray panel with a “brushed metal” pattern. The manufacturer’s logo is applied in the center and dots opposite the right side’s menu navigation buttons.
The V-shaped stand allows you to adjust only the screen tilt angle (+ 23 ° ..- 5 °). The lower border of the image is at the height of 9 cm above the table level. If desired, the leg can be removed and mounted on the wall: on the back, there is a VESA-compatible mount (100×100).
All connectors are located at the top of the notch in the rear panel and are oriented downward. There are frankly few ports: two video inputs (HDMI and VGA) and two mini-jacks (audio line-in and headphone-out).
ASUS VY249HE Monitor: Menu
Six physical buttons are used to control the monitor, located on the case’s bottom edge, next to the power button. To make them easier to find “blindly,” there are dots on the front panel opposite them. When navigating through the menus, a legend is displayed on the screen showing what functions these buttons are currently performing.
The first item in the main menu is the Splendid branded section, which contains preset video modes. This is followed by a submenu entirely dedicated to eye care – Eye Care, followed by the item “Color” with traditional graphic settings (brightness/contrast/color temperature, etc.). Additional picture settings are collected in the next paragraph. Here you can find the overdrive adjustment, AMD FreeSync activation, the mode of increasing brightness in the shadows, etc. The “Signal” item allows you to switch between video inputs manually. The “Parameters” contains system settings such as OSD parameters, turning on the eco-mode, choosing the power indicator’s behavior, displaying information about the current video mode, and resetting all settings to factory settings. And the last item, “Label,” allows you to assign custom values to two “hot” buttons.
ASUS VY249HE Monitor: Functionality
ASUS VY249HE uses a 23.8-inch IPS panel with Full HD resolution. Pixel density 92.56 PPI, dot size 0.2744 mm. The image is dense enough that individual pixels are not particularly conspicuous.
The maximum refresh rate is 75 Hz – it seems that such an increased frequency compared to standard “office” 60 Hz is already beginning to become a new standard for non-gaming monitors, which is good news. There is also support for AMD FreeSync adaptive frequency technology (operates in the 48-75 Hz range), so this monitor can be used for games if desired.
The brightness in this monitor is adjusted by changing the current strength, PWM is not applied across the entire brightness range, so the ASUS VY249HE does not flicker backlight.
The Eye Care menu contains several settings to help the user protect their eyes from eye strain behind the monitor. Blue Light Filter reduces the amount of blue in the backlight for a warmer, more comfortable image. “Eye Rest” allows you to set the time interval after which the monitor will remind you to rest. Eye check contains a series of tests with which the user can perform basic self-diagnostics (this includes the Snellen chart for testing visual acuity, the Amsler grid for determining defects in the center of the visual field, and radial beams for astigmatism test).
Image quality ASUS VY249HE
Traditionally for ASUS monitors, matrix overdrive control is carried out using the TraceFree menu item – it can take 5 different values, from 20 to 100; setting the slider to zero disables overdrive. Increasing the matrix overclocking from zero to 60 gradually increases the clarity in dynamic scenes and still does not lead to artifacts; they appear at a value of 80 but remain quite moderate; at maximum acceleration, the trails behind moving objects become clearly visible. As a result, we would recommend setting this parameter to 60 or 80, no higher.
TraceFree (0, 60, 100):
The monitor uses a semi-matte screen coating that almost eliminates parasitic glare and reflections. Simultaneously, the crystalline effect is practically absent (slight graininess in monotone areas of the image, noticeable on conventional matte displays).
The uniformity of black is quite good, as for a budget model, the backlight leaks are insignificant: against a black background in a dark room, you can see lighter spots in the upper right and lower left corners; in the usual mode of using the monitor, this is absolutely not striking.
The glow effect is rather weak, as for an IPS panel: when viewed from above, on the left, the glow against a dark background is almost imperceptible. On the right, it is noticeably stronger but still very moderate.
In terms of viewing angles, ASUS VY249HE shows very decent results. In this regard, the IPS-matrix clearly outperforms its competitors: if you deviate to the side, the brightness decreases noticeably, and the image becomes slightly colder, but there are no other changes in the picture quality.
The minimum brightness is only 25 cd / m², a meager figure for a desktop monitor, especially one that does not use PWM; with such brightness behind this screen, you can work comfortably even in complete darkness. The maximum brightness is 250 cd / m², which is not much but quite sufficient for ordinary office tasks. The maximum static contrast ratio is 1150: 1, which is very good by the IPS monitor standards and is higher than the contrast ratio officially declared in the monitor specifications (1000: 1).
The main video mode, offering the most versatile picture and access to manual picture settings, can be considered “Standard.” The color gamut almost completely covers the sRGB space (76% Adobe RGB, 78% DCI-P3). Three presets and manual adjustment for three primary colors are available for color temperature settings; the Warm is the closest to the 6500K standard. The others offer a noticeably higher temperature, giving a cool tint. There are no gamma settings in the menu. Its value in this mode is overestimated to 2.4. The backlighting uniformity is average; at maximum brightness, the difference between the brightest area (top of the screen) and the least bright (bottom) is about 20%. With the uniformity of color temperature, the situation is about the same. This parameter “walks” within 8%, with the zone closest to 6500K in the lower-left corner. Color accuracy is quite typical for a budget monitor, with an average deltaE of 1.5.
In the sRGB video mode, all image settings (brightness/contrast/color temperature) are completely blocked, while the brightness is set at 95 cd / m², the contrast is 930: 1. The color gamut remains the same as in Standard mode, and so does the gamma value. Color temperature appears to be set to Warm – at least, its value in sRGB mode, 6900K, corresponds to this standard mode parameter. The uniformity of the backlight and the color reproduction accuracy also correspond to those in the previous case. Still, the color temperature’s uniformity turns out to be much better – the maximum difference becomes less than 5%.
Conclusion: Should you buy ASUS VY249HE Monitor?
ASUS VY249HE is a typical budget monitor for a home or office, with the simplest stand, minimalistic design, and affordable price. At the same time, the image quality turns out to be at a decent level for its class, plus the manufacturer offers a unique feature of its kind in the form of a set of functions for eye care.
