Apple has introduced an updated Locator app. Now you can locate third-party products in Locator using secure and private search tools available through a network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices. The Locator Network Accessory program, allows third-party manufacturers to create products that are compatible with the application so that users can track their most valuable items in it. New Locator compatible products from Belkin, Chipolo and VanMoof will be available starting next week.
“For over a decade, our customers have been using Locator to help locate lost or stolen Apple devices while protecting sensitive information,” said Bob Borchers, Apple vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “And now, by launching the Locator Network access program for accessories, we are opening up the vast possibilities of one of our most popular services to even more people. New products from Belkin, Chipolo and VanMoof support these technologies brilliantly, and we can’t wait to see what our other partners have to offer. “
Locator network access program for accessories
The Find My Accessory Accessory Program is part of the Made for iPhone (MFi) program and will allow any accessory designer to add Find Find Network connectivity to their products. Third-party devices will have to meet the same stringent privacy requirements as Apple devices. Approved products can be added to the app under the new Items tab. In the store, they will be marked with the Works with Apple Find My badge (Works with Apple’s Find My app) so customers can see immediately that the product is supported by Locator and can be located using the global network of devices.
Apple also announced today that it would publish a preliminary specification for chipset manufacturers later this spring. By accessing this document, third-party device designers will take advantage of ultra-wideband technology in devices equipped with the U1 chip. This will allow you to determine the location of nearby devices even more accurately.
The first products to support the Locator app
The first third-party accessories to support the Locator app will be the latest VanMoof S3 and X3 e-bikes, Belkin SOUNDFORM Freedom True Wireless headphones and Chipolo ONE Spot key fobs. With the new features, users will quickly find a parked bike, headphones in the gym, a backpack left somewhere, and other things. Products and accessories with support for the Locator application from other manufacturers will also be available soon.
One app – a huge global network of search devices
Find on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac makes it easy to locate your Apple devices and find out where your friends and family are. At the same time, personal data is always reliably protected. If a user loses an Apple device, Find Lat will help find it on the map, turn on a beep remotely, put it in Lost Mode for immediate locking, or display a message and phone number on the lock screen communication. And if there is a risk that the device has fallen into the wrong hands, you can remotely erase all information from it.
Now the Locator network can help you find your device even if it doesn’t connect to the internet. This network comprises hundreds of millions of Apple devices that use Bluetooth wireless technology to find lost devices and nearby items. Information about the approximate location of the lost device is transferred to the owner. This information is transmitted anonymously and is all end-to-end encrypted so that no one, including Apple and third parties, will be able to view device information or location.
