A few days ago, American actor and musician Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) announced that he would be in charge of relaunching the Mr. & Mrs. Smith franchise for Amazon. According to Variety, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Glover and Amazon Studios have signed a multi-year, eight-figure partnership.
In addition to Donald Glover, his brother Stephen Glover, with whom they worked together on the TV series Atlanta for the Walt Disney Company’s FX channel, is included in the deal. Interestingly, in the fall of last year, representatives of FX Networks said that the script for the third and fourth seasons of the Atlanta series has already been written, filming will begin immediately after the removal of coronavirus restrictions, and the first episodes of the new season will be released in 2021. How the departure of the brothers from under the wing of Disney (where Donald managed to play the young Lando Calrissian in the film “Han Solo. A Star Wars Story”) will affect, the fate of the show is still unclear.
In any case, the duo of brothers will be working on new projects for the Amazon Prime Video streaming service. One of the first TV shows directed by the Glovers will be a project about a heroine “like Beyonce.” Also, Donald will have a personal portal in the Prime Video service at his disposal to create personalized content and curate third-party sources.
Recall that on Tuesday, Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Trash,” “Killing Eve,” “No Time to Die”) announced the restart of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith / “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” based on the 2005 feature film of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The artists will not only play the main roles but also act as executive producers and screenwriters. Francesca Sloan (Fargo) has been appointed showrunner and will be released on Amazon Prime in 2022.
